During a House of Representatives hearing on alleged extrajudicial killings (EJK) related to the previous administration’s war on drugs, Ka Tunying, a well-known supporter of President Marcos, reacted to the testimony of Royina Garma. In her sworn statement, Garma revealed that former President Rodrigo Duterte had asked her to identify a suitable individual to lead the anti-drug campaign, specifically someone from the religious group Iglesia ni Cristo. This revelation sparked debate, as it highlighted Duterte’s approach to finding key individuals for his controversial war on drugs.

Ka Tunying, during his Facebook live session, questioned the relevance of highlighting the religious affiliation of a person tasked with the war on drugs, specifically asking why it was necessary to mention if the person was a member of Iglesia ni Cristo. He pointed out that if someone were Catholic or Muslim, their religion wouldn’t typically be emphasized. He also praised former President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drug campaign, stating that during Duterte’s term, peace prevailed in their barangay.

He expressed his views on the effectiveness of Duterte’s war on drugs, remarking that their community experienced significant peace and order during the previous administration. He humorously added that even petty crimes, such as stealing ducks (“kahit magnanakaw ng bibi tumino”), had disappeared. This statement reflects his belief that the former president’s anti-drug campaign brought about positive changes, particularly in terms of public safety, contrasting it with the current administration’s performance.
